We are studying Earth's landforms this week in Science and today was such a nice day I decided to take our project outside. ( Definately saved on the mess we could have had in our kitchen!) We made a volcano in our garden and we had a rainbow of lava flowing from it. Here is what we did.
We placed a plastic cup that was about 12 inches tall by 3 inches in diameter on the dirt.
We then piled dirt around it to form the volcano...clear to the top of the cup.
I added to the cup 4 tsp. flour and 5 tsp. baking soda.
In a seperate container we mixed 1 1/2 cups vinegar and 10 drops food coloring.
Then we slowly poured the vinegar into the cup and watched it erupt.
The kids really had fun using different colors.
For the last volcano we took the cup out and just placed everything in the hole and it worked just as well plus looked more realistic.

FUN! I remember making volcanoes with Amy and Bridgett at least once a year. I suppose it was mainly to see which year would be the biggest mess! Love the pics.
